Benefits of learning a foreign language in today’s fast-paced and competitive realm is very important to keep up with the world. The coronavirus pandemic, along with the continuing lockdown, is in every way taking a toll on mental health. Online education and work from home are the key reasons why people are cutting off from their social life. People are limiting themselves to the four walls of their room, electronic devices, and their ‘Not so social, social media. People need to understand the importance of engaging themselves in new activities, such as indoor tasks which require mental and physical labor. Learning a foreign language can help one understand the linguistic approach and understand the etymology of the words we use in the languages we speak. Learning languages with a unique script is challenging and fun at the same time. It requires a lot of practice; to understand the new alphabets and symbols and process them, to distinguish between the two given alphabets of the language you are learning. It provides some level of mental exercise, which is beneficial since it is really important to do mental exercise alongside the physical ones. There are a lot of language learning applications that are free of cost and help you with the basics of the language you desire to learn. Applications like Duolingo and Babble are free of cost and prove to be a marvelous way to start with any language and learn them up to at least an intermediate proficiency level. 

Learning a language is much more fun if the culture of the region influences you. Nowadays, East Asian languages like Korean and Japanese are gaining more recognition because of the influence of K-Pop and K-dramas across the world. Similarly, People are increasingly learning Japanese because they feel Anime’s highly influence them. Mandarin has already become a popular language that people across many nations are learning and speaking. Apart from these, people generally learn European languages like Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese or the North Germanic Languages. 


There are a lot of common features in languages like Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Though they are different while writing and speaking, they share a lot of common words. A person who is a native of either of the three can, to some extent, understand the other languages. Latin is the origin of Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese, and French. These languages are also called the ‘ROMANCE LANGUAGES’. German sounds a bit harsh and edgy, and thus, the spoken part is difficult. French requires a lot of speaking practice.

With comparatively simpler grammar for an English speaker, Spanish is an easier option. Also, with 450 million speakers worldwide (even more than English), Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. Apart from Spain, the origin country, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, and the USA are countries that are home to Spanish speakers across the world. 


It is very important to learn foreign languages apart from the one you are native to. Studies show that people who learn foreign languages have critical and creative thinking skills, better and enhanced concentration, improved memory. Multitasking and problem-solving abilities, better spatial skills, better listening and speaking skills. It’s better to learn one language at a time and acquire fluency in it if one intends to pursue the language professionally. But if one is learning the language for fun, one can go on learning as many languages as one can manage. It’s an excellent way to spend leisure time and learn something new. Learning with fun is what learning a new language is!
