COVID-19 virus brought a lot of trouble to everyone’s life, some lost their lives, some lost their loved one’s life, others lost their jobs and Everyone struggled financially or emotionally not once but twice during the first wave and second wave 3
but now we are about to overcome this bad phase of our life and lives are getting back on track slowly.
As we move on to find the cure of this deadly virus with the vaccine we saw There were a lot of rumors regarding the treatment of this disease by the vaccine, its usage, its side effects, etc.
Some of the rumours were –
They are not safe as they were made in a record time – The truth is every vaccine has to undergo a series of clinical trials and only after every trial is successful the vaccine is approved.
They can lead to long term effects –
There will be only side effects like any other vaccine has but as of now no long term effects are reported or known.
The vaccine can infect you with COVID-19 -They can cure and cannot infect you as they don’t have lives in them and i have already contacted COVID-19.
So I don’t need a vaccine –
If you were infected with COVID-19 you may have some antibodies but how long it will last is not known
And many more. It is important to not believe in such rumours and always check twice for the originality of such rumours.
Now keeping apart the rumours let’s see the facts that every vaccine has.
In India, there are majorly 2 vaccines being given to people –
“Covishield” and “COVAXIN” Now comparing both and coming to a better point will not be proper as both have a different way of functioning.
Firstly we will see what all are common in these two –
Both require two-dose to get the maximum efficiency.
Both are available for people above 18 years.
The government has made both vaccines free of cost for the people.
Now we have a look at Covishield –
Developed by the SERUM Institute of India and its scientific name is AstraZeneca.
Its effectivity rate is between 70% – 90%
The gap between the 2 doses set by the government right now is 84 days.
Ingredients(Raw materials) –
It composes of L-Histidine, Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, Polysorbate 80, L-Histidine hydrochloride monohydrate, Water for Injection, Ethanol, Sodium chloride, Sucrose, Disodium edetate dihydrate (EDTA).
Working – Covishield when injected into the body stimulates the body’s natural defence system to make the immunity stronger, the body then starts making multiple antibodies against any infection and virus. Vaccine, injected into the upper arm of the body.
Risks after taking the vaccine –
Individuals after taking this vaccine may suffer from swelling, tenderness, fatigue, fever, stomach pain, burning eyes. Covishield vaccine has been using the viral vector platform, which is a different technology from traditional and uses adenovirus found in Chimpanzees
Effectiveness against the Delta Variant –
There is a significant drop in the efficiency rate of the Covishield against the delta variant and is around 65% effective against the delta variant.
People with allergic reactions must be careful while taking the vaccine, those on blood thinning medication should consult a doctor and patients who have just recovered from COVID-19 should postpone their vaccination by 3-4 weeks.
Covishield has the approval of the World Health Organization but is waiting for the approval of the European Medicines Agency(EMA).
So, if you are planning to travel to Europe where vaccination is essential, you must check which nations have allowed the Covishield vaccinated people and then plan your travel.
Let’s have a look at COVAXIN vaccine – This is also a Made in India vaccine and Bharat Biotech.
The scientific name of this vaccine is BBV152
Bharat Biotech official journal stated the COVAXIN demonstrated an 81% efficiency rate. This vaccine recommended to take 4-6 weeks of an interval between two doses of vaccine.
Ingredients of Raw materials in COVAXIN are a combination of several viruses dead bodies, 6µg of whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 antigen, and inactive aluminium hydroxide gel.
Working – After taking the first jab it triggers the body’s immune system and then it starts making more antibodies and protecting the body from any future infections.
Risks after taking the vaccine – Some individuals show no sign of side effects whereas others, seen with Fever, Nausea, Swelling at the injection site, muscle pain and may take up to 24 hrs.
COVAXIN vaccine is made using the technology which is used to make a vaccine for Rabies, Polio, Pertussis, etc.
Effectiveness against the Delta Variant –
Just like Covishield COVAXIN has also shown a drop in efficiency rate against delta variants and now it accounts for 61% effectiveness.
COVAXIN on the other hand is waiting for approval from both the World health organisation and European Medicines Agency(EMA). Only a few European countries have allowed COVAXIN vaccinated people to travel so check before you plan to travel.
The reason being, approval of vaccines is a 4 step process –
1. Expression of interest
2. Meeting between WHO and manufacturer
3. Dossier review by WHO
4. Decision on approval
Bharat Biotech’s case, Some good news is that after the Bharat Biotech phase 3 trial has shown very good results and we can soon expect WHO to give it Emergency Use Listing (EUL).
At present, there is another vaccine available, Sputnik-V. It is a Russian vaccine and is available in India on a paid basis. This vaccine also requires two doses for maximum effectiveness. This vaccine is not available for free but is available at Rs. 300 per dose in most states of India. Sputnik-V also reported an efficiency rate of close to 90%. This is available for people above 18 years.
Now coming to the part of which vaccine is better for you. Looking at the numbers and stats of both the vaccines it is very evident that both are equally good and choosing one won’t be possible.
It is also advised by the government to take the vaccine available for you at your nearest location.
Very soon both the vaccine will get approval from WHO and EMA so this factor can also be cancelled out.
The only factor that remains is the waiting time between the two vaccines. COVAXIN has a lesser waiting time but this does not mean it is better than others, every vaccine has its way of functioning and requires a different period. When taking the vaccine you should not consider this point and take the vaccine available at the nearest.
We request everyone eligible to take your vaccine as soon as possible and help us fight against this disease and completely make the country COVID free.
