There are so many professions that exist today. From primitive times to the present concrete jungles, the vastness and variety of profession have increased tremendously. More and more opportunities keep coming up, almost directly proportional to the population of the world. For obvious reasons, the rate of growth of professional opportunities cannot keep up with the rate of growth of the human population on earth.
However, it is still allowing the human race to survive somehow. But the real question that arises is that are these professions really worth anything? Are they contributing to something? Do such professions exist that do not have any proper significance and meaning, yet they keep existing somehow? So many questions.
In the back of our minds, I believe that we all find some or the other profession useless. We either balk at the sight of them or try to contemplate their work and the actual logic behind it. It would be very difficult to go profession wise and try to measure their worth, hence, we’ll be looking at them in broad categories. But before that, think of it. Have you ever wondered why you subconsciously do not respect a certain profession or position? Have you ever truly pondered upon it? If not, now is the time.
To answer all the questions in one single sentence – yes, every profession is valuable and contributes something or the other to the society. Now, to answer these questions with reasons, we will have a trip round the broad categories.
The White & Gold Collar Jobs
These categories include professionals like Doctors, Engineers, Businessmen, Office employees, Lawyers and more. This is the category that would have not come to your mind at all. Because, in the views of the society, these are the highly valued professions that are required to run the country properly. The professionals under these esteemed professions are needed to build up the economy, help the public and assist in the growth of the country.
It is pretty clear how they affect us all and how important they are for the countries and their citizens. They help in the basic functioning and running of the nation. But does that also imply that only they help run the country? At first glance, it may seem like that. However, it is a totally wrong implication. While they support each other and the nation well, there are other jobs that make sure they are in their best spirits to give their best!
The Laborers & Maintenance Workers
This category includes people that do the groundwork and also helps in the basic management of one’s household and day to day activities. Your mind might have drifted mostly to this category when the questions above were asked. So, let me re-ask the question and this time, truly think upon it: Does this category of jobs contribute anything to the society?
Yes, it does. It completely does. This category includes people who physically build the houses and societies we live in. They help us maintain the place we reside in. They help with huge projects, like new hotels or hospitals coming up. The maintenance workers are extremely specialized in one skill. You call an electrician when there is some problem with the electrical appliances at your house. You go to a shoemaker who helps you stitch your shoes well, making them impenetrable.
When you shift to a new place, a carpenter is the one who helps you turn a house into home. Hence, they are all essential. They keep us sated. Even the cleaning ladies help in maintaining the places we visit and even the very place we live in. They reduce the pressure of tasks upon us and hence, allows us to focus on a single job with undeterred attention. Hence, they indirectly contribute to building up the economy.
Not just that, by handling these essential tasks that need to be performed on a daily basis, they contribute to the society with utmost diligence. They deserve the respect the society fails them to give. Reflecting deeply upon their contributions is a huge need for the society today. Only then, we will be able to value their worth.
The Artists are the essence of the soul. People often wonder about the whole point of their work. Beautiful as they may be, where does it contribute? Does it at all?
What we do not understand is that they are the ones who are the most needed by the society. They have the ability to help a person escape from whatever he or she has been dealing with lately. They offer escapism and the fuel of life to the soul. Without any art to consume or a film to watch, how will people want to spend their weekends? How will they experience the life to its fullest in a world devoid of art? We listen to music and lose ourselves in its beautiful melody, in the rhythm of its beats. It brings true happiness to person and makes him/her believe that life is a true gift.
These artists are the essence of all. While people do their jobs to earn a good livelihood, it is only the art surrounding them that motivates to keep working and keep thriving. Because of them, people find themselves daring to even dream of things they thought they could not do. They watch themselves achieve their dreams in the midst of art. The artists have been underrated for so long. People say what is their use in the economy. They are the economy. They are that foundation upon which everyone wants to exist. Hence, if they every crossed your mind when I asked you that question, now you know how truly valuable they are.
Even in categorising the professions into broad categories, it is impossible to include them all. Some of the other basic professions that I have missed are the safety ensuring professions – the policemen, detective, fire fighters and more. Their contribution is loud and clear. They help us feel safe and offer us aid in case of any mishappening. I doubt this category would have ever crossed your mind.
Surely, we do not need to discuss the profession of all professions – the teachers. Their contribution is immense and unbound. Then comes the category with people who provide food. From the cooks to an ice-cream man, it is truly a blessing to have people who offers delicious food and bring a smile on our faces!
Every profession does contribute something or the other to the society. That is why they exist in the first place. One just needs the vision to identify their worth. Every profession deserves to be respected just like every person does. Together, all the professions not only contribute to the society but also actually builds it.
The quality of society depends on the quality of these professions. If everyone does their work honestly with full determination, the society formed would be a wonderful result. However, any profession involving unethical aspects like corruption would eventually lead to a corrupt and unworthy society.
Here is a fun activity: invent a profession that you think would be totally useless. I’ll start: a bedtime story reader. Well, who needs that when we have podcasts and the best source – our parents. Your turn now!
