Rise of Empires: Ottomans
Who are Ottomans?
Ottoman dynasty was one of the strongest and most ruling dynasty in world history. Osman Gazi or Osman 1 of a kayi tribe (One of the tribes in turkey), founded Ottoman dynasty. The dynasty named after him as “Sultanate-e-Osmania” or Romanised as Ottoman Empire. The chief ruler or sultan was given the absolute power and religious authority over his people. The empire extended to three continents Asia, Africa and Europe.
It was found in 1299 after the declination of Seljuk empire. It really began to expand in Fifteenth-Century and consolidate power after the conquest of Constantinople. The Ottoman Empire reached its great size till the seventeenth century but lasted till 1922. It was one of the largest dynasties of the world which ruled three continents stretching from Balkan in south-eastern Europe across Anatolia to Asia, Central Asia, Arabia and North Africa for about 600 years. Europeans generally viewed them as a great threat. Many Historians consider this Islamic dynasty as the superpower of the world as well the great source for regional stability, secularity, security and important achievements in science and arts.
Sultan Mehmed II
Well Getting Back to the topic i.e., the series Rise of Empires: Ottoman is a story of young and brave king Sultan Mehmed II popularly known as Mehmed the conqueror who conquered the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. This puts an end to the thousand-year-old reign of Byzantines.
The series starts with the introduction of Mehmed II – the king who will take of the byzantine empire one day by conquering Constantinople. It shows his relationship with his mother whom he had to leave at a very young age because of his father Sultan Murad the sultan of the Ottoman Empire who wants him to start his training. Once reunited with his father with whom he shares a complicated relationship and then he meets his stepmother, Mother Mara.
At a very young age of 13, Mehmed is asked to take the throne as the sultan of the ottoman empire. However, after being pressurized by the Hanlie pasha vazir of the dynasty his father takes back the throne from him thinking that he would not be able to handle the role of sultan this early. Mehmed is very ambitious since childhood he wants to give himself the name of a conqueror. By doing something which 23 armies have failed to do including his own father i.e., conquering Constantinople.
Soon after few years the news of demise of sultan Murad start spreading like a fire in forest. Mehmed walks back to home as soon as he gets to know this and is induct as the new sultan again.
As soon as getting on the throne his aims are clear that he wants to do something which was impossible till date. Many of his court members refused to accept his order to Constantinople but Mehmed was determined. He was way too ambitious. He was confident that he has the power to do something which no one had done in the last thousand years. His decision to do something or to succeed was always unchangeable and firm.
Finally, he succeeds in convincing the vazir to attack Constantinople. Mehmed was aware of the fact that winning Constantinople is not easy. It was an undefeated city. No one till date was successful to take down the walls of this city.
Mehmed gathers the army of eighty thousand soldiers, some eight-metre-long canons which can throw two-point five-metre cannon balls which will be helpful to break down the undefeatable walls. A big army of ottomans marches towards the outskirts of Constantinople. Besides the Ottomans, Romans were also preparing for their defence. They hired a very brave commander-pirate Giustiniani to defend their walls. According to the Islamic rules of war, Mehmed sends a letter to the emperor of the byzantine empire to surrender. But after the denial of Romans, the war is inevitable. A war that was about to create history.
Romans were pretty confident about their victory, as they knew that their walls are way too strong to defend the city. War begins with the firing of cannon towards the wall. A troop of ottoman soldiers running towards the city and Giustiniani and his soldier defending them. Giustiniani was a very brave warrior and a great commander. He was the greatest challenge for Mehmed to enter the wall. He and his troop killed thousands of Ottomans. Mehmed is now pissed of with the performance of his soldier on the battlefield. He himself goes to Giustiniani and offers him a position in the ottoman empire, Giustiniani considers it but refuses the offer.
Meanwhile, the vazir is constantly advising him to get back to his state because they were on the verge of failure. Mehmed was unable to understand what to do the only thing he wanted was to conquer the city. He was ready for sacrificing everything. But despite his determination, he was also dealing with lots of mental pressure, his soldiers were facing defeat every single day, other empires were planning to attack the capital of ottomans, the food was about to finish, Romans were about to get the external help from other European dynasties. But Mehmed believed in prophecies that were made. He thought that if not now then it would never be, then he changed his strategies. He case studies his war plan and avoids the mistakes which previous rulers have made, and comes up with a new strategy.
Mehmed encircles the city of Constantinople. He gets the governor of the Genoese colony of Galata to collaborate with the Ottomans by claiming how much profit they are going to earn by trading with him. Now it is the time of the last attack, one mistake and Mehmed is going to lose everything. He encourages his soldiers by quoting the sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace be upon him), that how great the commander will be and how great the army will be which will take down the city of Constantinople. He gives a very inspiring speech.
The Ottomans attack on City breaks the wall crushing the Roman soldiers. Giustiniani is heavily injured and leaves the battlefield thinking that their victory is impossible. Now the Roman emperor is helpless. He had already lost everything his money his army. He jumps into a troop of ottoman soldiers with his shining sword and gets lost in the big troop.
Finally, after the 53 days siege, the city of Constantinople falls on 24 May 1453. History was created. Mehmed did something that was impossible. A 21-year-old conquers the city. He walks into the city on his horse, enters the building of Hagia Sophia. He renames the city from Constantinople to Istanbul and makes it the new capital of the Ottoman Empire.
