When this COVID pandemic started in the late December of 2019. Everybody thought this to be a normal seasonal virus that will not be concerning anyone. Then came the year 2020. Early months and people still trying to keep their New Year’s resolutions in hopes of this year would be bringing something new in their lives or perhaps change it, and well it did. The late weeks of January saw cases pop up not only in India but also throughout the world. The news of the virus spreading rapidly in China became more and more concerning. Countries started taking precautionary measures to dampen the effect of the virus as much as possible.
Then came March, at the start of it some of the countries were going into lockdowns. China was already in lockdown, but it was still not a concern for the people of India. However, the last weeks of March saw the world-changing, lockdowns were implemented in all the major countries. Media screaming about the dangers of this virus a little too much and the panic started to strike the spread more than the virus had then. That is how we got into a Pandemic that has stretched too long.
A Different Perspective towards Pandemic
Now you do not want me to remind you about all the things that happened during the lockdown. You know all about it. It is after all a good document incident both in the print and in the media networks. Everybody remembers the crazy activities we did like the closing of lights and banging utensils together. Which helped in boosting the morale of the government. And gave them the confidence to announce any activity and be sure that people will follow it as generously glorified our unbiased media.
No, we are not going to talk about that, except for the part that we already talked about. I meant we are not going to talk about it anymore. What we are going to talk about is how long this pandemic has been. And how long it will be before we wear it out. When this pandemic started, no one thought that this pandemic was going to take a whole year away. Well, it took many giant companies about a month to realize the fact that you can still make people work for you if they are at home. And even longer hours without increasing their pay. But it was not all so jolly. With the health worker’s long work hours and putting their life at stake for the people of the country.
Long Student Hours
Let me start this with the evergreen students. I mean at the start of the lockdown, students had some fun with exams postponed. And the multiplayer games catching people too bored staying idle in their house. However, as I said the lockdown extended too long and so has the pandemic. With each month going in lockdown. The students were in line for worries especially students with boards and college entrances to follow. This also meant uncertainty. For students who had taken a drop and had put a year of their lives at the line.
A Hard Bargain
But this pandemic has made sure that no student gets to enjoy the college or even school lives they wished to enjoy with most of their exams and classes taken online. There is a lack of physical interaction with friends. And most of the students will probably pass an entire class before they attend their schools and colleges again. This is close to skipping a year in school/college without actually skipping one. You get to miss everything that was fun. Which are basically the various activities and games for a whole year. And who knows maybe the half of next year. And all the while getting stuck at your screen with no relaxed timetables for studies. An entire year with only WhatsApp groups, News Channels, and some technical glitches and games in between lectures as a source of entertainment is indeed a hard bargain for young aspiring minds.
Not to omit the fact that many of the schools closed down. That was due to this long wait for this pandemic to get over. Many of the schools neither had the infrastructure nor the budget to take regular classes. Not to mention the online exams in the stretched lockdown and waiting patiently for all of this to get over. But it never really got over completely even as the country started to open up. This resulted in many schools being shut down. And many children left with no option but to stay home with nothing much to do.
The Affects Of Late Sessions
The schools started late sessions and some eventually closed down forever. This led to many children losing their touch with studies and also getting uninterested altogether in pursuing studies further. With serious salary cuts and many people losing their jobs. Many children dropped out because it was getting too expensive for them to manage education in comparison to managing other resources necessary for them to live and survive in this changing world.
The United Nations reported that close to 24 million students are at risk of dropping out of school and not returning to the schools next year. The UN has also reported that more than1.6 a billion students are affected across the world due to this stretched pandemic and the disruption it has caused the education system.
Stretched Work Days
Well, it was no surprise that everybody has worked hard at home doing house chores at home. And well to be honest it was no problem for the most part as the lockdown began and I mean the first one. As the lockdown numbers kept increasing so did the challenge to daily house chores given that we had so much to do in these lockdowns like playing Ludo with friends and pretending to do other office or school work just to get out of doing house chores.
However, in all seriousness, the pandemic also saw serious jobs and salary cuts that were expected due to the lack of flow of income throughout the world. People also ended up working extra hours due to the work from a home concept which not only forced them to increase their work hours from their regular 9 am to 5 pm jobs to the increased 9 am to 8 pm or even 10 pm but also missed on some quality office politics. Hospital staff also saw their hours stretched even more than usual which helped save the lives of many people again even more than usual. Businesses getting closed employers released are some of the effects it had on the business side of things.
Lessons To Take Away
On the brighter side, this was also the time when people started focusing more on their mental and physical health with no idea when the nation going to open people started to eat a little more healthy and yoga became the go-to method to have a relaxed and clear mind. People started to sanitize more of the hands and the surrounding it, which has led to a cleaner environment. This also saw the pollution becoming less and less a concern and the environment self-cleansing itself until the lockdown opened and people got out which well crossed the cleaner environment and environment out of the list.
With the vaccines now starting to get in the open, there is a little less fear and a little more hope. But this does not discount the fact that the pandemic is still far from over and all the good habits we continued during this period is still necessary as we have the responsibility of not only saving ourselves but for others as well. Such has been the impact of the pandemic that has its place registered in history even before its end and thus books across centuries will tell the short tale of a pandemic stretched too long.
