Every bookworm knows the familiar feeling of losing oneself in the world of books. Especially when the book is a part of a bigger storyline and gradually leads the reader into its world. Such books, which collectively takes the reader into a bigger journey, are book series. The series may consist of many books – ranging from two to however long the author wants the series to be.
A series of two books is called a Duology; three is Trilogy; four is Quartet and so on. However, the most beautiful feeling in getting submerged in a book series is that the characters become the reader’s friends, the fantasy world, his/her home and the story, his/her alternate life.
It is said that a person who has read many books has lived a million lives. It could not be any truer. A reader gets to experience so many things by reading a book. When reading a book series, it is a whole cinematic experience that leaves the person thrilled and hooked till the very end.
And that is why here are a few must-read book series recommendations. All the books stated below are of the genre Fiction and Fantasy. Every book series is precious in its own way and I’ll state every reason why you should experience these fictional worlds. It will all be worth it!
1) Shadowhunters – The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
The Shadowhunters universe is vast and strong. Made by Cassandra Clare, the Shadowhunters universe covers generations of amazing adventures of interrelated characters. She makes it really fun to trace the bewildering family relations.
Out of all the books I have read of this universe, The Mortal Instruments series will always stay at the top. This series (basically, this universe) includes a variety of mythical beings, coexisting in the same world as the humans, hidden by a little glamour that helps them to blend in. The reader gets to step into the world of Faeries, Vampires, Werewolves, Warlocks and last but not the least, the shadowhunters.
The series revolve around Clary Fray and how she discovers that she is a shadowhunter. For her, the normal human life was all that existed in her mind. But discovering that her mother was a shadowhunter and suddenly, made her forget the memories of the shadowhunter world to vanish to the human world, resorting to hiding this fact from her all her life confuses her.
She has questions that desperately needs to be answered. As she discovers her new world, she develops deep connections with other shadowhunters too. She starts to feel more at home and buckles up to fight a major threat that resurfaces to claim the shadowhunter world. She, with her friends and loved ones by her side, get ready for anything and everything. This joyous series had to be included in the must-read list because everyone should experience a world beyond what the human eyes can trace!
2) Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas
The Throne of Glass series authored by Sarah J Maas is another mind-blowing fiction fantasy series that a reader must read in his/her lifetime. It consists of eight books in total and is wonderfully crafted by the author. This thriller series weaves around mind-bending plot twists and cliff-hangers, with amazing character chemistries and development.
Set in a completely different universe, the series has the ability to make the reader laugh with joy, shed buckets of tears, exclaim in shock and disrupting the whole household by non-stop talking about this new universe. Yes, this series is not the kind of series one side reads. It takes over your mind and your world and is impossible to forget about.
Reading a Sarah J Maas book is throwing away everything you knew, everything she has been building up for two to three books when a major cliff-hanger arrives. It is about re-reading it after knowing the twists and turns and studying things from a different point of view. Only then one can truly understand how brilliantly and intricately this world has been built up.
The story starts with the protagonist Celaena Sardothein, the sassiest and most talented assassin to ever exist. Personally, her character has always been one of my most favourite fictional characters of all time. It follows through her journey of getting the rare opportunity to compete at the High Palace to become the King’s private assassin. That is just the beginning. It starts here and the series end at a totally different take. After finishing up the series, it is hard to fathom the complexity and beauty of the series. Always makes you want to dive right back into that world.
3) Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
Six of Crows duology written by Leigh Bardugo is undoubtedly one of the best duologies ever written. It is so gripping that it keeps the reader asking for more. The characters are beautifully created and every aspect of them have been thought through.
There are six protagonists whose story we follow through. The book has been written from all six characters’ point of view. With their tragic backstories, unmatched talent, and mastery in creating and dealing with chaos, they all somehow find their way to each other and embark on an impossible heist together. It’s not just about their journey, it is about their bonding, character development and the love they develop for each other.
The story takes place in a world of magic, where the ones gifted with magic are known as the Grisha. The Grishas are divided according to their powers. Simply put, their powers are known as the Small Science – the ability to manipulate natural things. For example, a Heartrender (a grisha category) can control the blood flow and pressure of a person, an Inferni can manipulate fire and so on for all the other categories.
The way this world has been created is magnificent. Even though it’s a fictional universe altogether, there are so many relatable issues in it. One of the most positive points of Leigh Bardugo is that how effortlessly she includes the diversity of people.
It is definitely one of those book series which cannot be missed.
It would be amazing if you all check out the above recommendations. I am sure you won’t be disappointed! Being a huge book series fan, I read a lot of book series and then, however unfair it may seem, rank them. There is a lot of things to be considered before ranking them and it is not an easy task.
