A TV series is something that keeps us entertained and helps us to de-stress by invoking emotions like laughter, sadness, empathy, etc. It has many episodes and runs over few or sometimes, several seasons.

It has a common title throughout. In addition, it is open ended. That is to say, it does not have predetermined number of episodes. A TV series can be of any genre like adventure, fantasy, crime, thrill, love, etc.

Over the years, there have been some great series that have entertained us. These include animated as well as real. Both are equally good and have gathered huge fan following due to their plots, characters, storylines, etc. On that note, let us have a look at some of them.

How I Met Your Mother

HIMYM, as it is often abbreviated, ran from 2005-2014. For the nine years that it ran, it gave us 208 episodes of absolute fun and a roller coaster of emotions. It is known for its unique structure, humor, and incorporation of dramatic elements. HIMYM is a perfect example of proper blend of comedy as well as feelings.

It is set in the year 2030, where an older protagonist, Ted Mosby, tells his children about he met their mother. In other words, the show is set in the past. The show has won 10 Emmy awards. Moreover, the cast as well as the show have won People’s Choice Awards. It ran for over 9 seasons making it awesome!

The Office

It depicts the work life of office employees in a mocking way. There are two instalments of the same series. One ran from 2001-2003 and was a BBC series. The second one is an adaptation of the first one. While the first ran only for 2 seasons, the second ran for 9 seasons from 2005-2013. The show became increasingly famous with every season.

The show’s characters, content, structure, and tone was considerably different from that of its British counterpart. As a result, it received significant acclaim from the critics. It was filmed in a single-camera setup without a studio audience or a laugh track. The series aired 201 episodes during its 9 year run.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad is a crime drama television series which ran from 2008-2013. Consisting of 5 seasons and 62 episodes, it is considered as one of the best television series.  The title itself is a Southern colloquialism which means “to turn to a life of crime”. Its popularity among people increased with every season till it was widely popular throughout the world.

The series has won several awards and its success gave way to a prequel and a movie based on it. Currently, with a rating of 9.4, it ranks 4th on the IMDb rankings. The show largely revolves around Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Moreover, the series also holds a Guinness World Record for being the most critically acclaimed show of all time.

Death Note

Originally a Japanese manga series, Death Note is one of the most widely popular anime today. After gaining popularity as a manga, it was adapted as a television anime. It aired from 2006-07. Despite having only 1 season and 37 episodes, it has become famous among viewers.

The series was also adapted into 3 live action films. Moreover, a miniseries and a fourth film was released in 2016. An American film adapted was released on Netflix in 2017 with a rumoured sequel to release in the future. Although not very lengthy, the series provides quality over quantity which is always best.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Still going on, the series premiered 2013 and has completed 7 seasons so far, with the 8th set to release sometime in the near future. Further, it is a police procedural comedy which has been produced as a single camera comedy. In addition, it has also won several awards over the years. It was cancelled by FOX after 5 seasons but picked up by NBC later on.

Till date, it has given the audience 143 episodes and more are to come. The show has been applauded for dealing with various social issues like racism. Moreover, it has beautifully portrayed LGBTQ whilst retaining a sense of humour. It is one of the most unique series of all time.

The Good Place

The series premiered in 2016 and ran till 2020. It has 4 seasons and 53 episodes. It is produced as a single-camera fantasy comedy. The series makes use of ethics and philosophy in a very creative and unique manner. As a result, it has bagged many awards, despite not going on for too long.

The series is set in afterlife, which in itself is very different and rarely explored in a television series. It has also been critically acclaimed for its writing, acting, originality, tone and setting. Moreover, from a deeper point of view, it teaches us several things about morality and ethics in a fun and creative way.

Attack on Titan

With over 70 episodes and 4 seasons, the 4th going on currently, Attack on Titan is a Japanese dark fantasy anime television series. It has been adapted from a manga of the same name. It is one of the most popular anime till date. Moreover, the series has become increasingly famous with each season.

The 4th season is the last. Till date, four compilation films have been made on the series based on the first three seasons. Today, it has become one of the most well known anime worldwide.


It aired from 2010-2017 with four three part series with 13 episodes in total.  In addition, a special episode was aired in 2016. The series is based on the adaptation of the character of Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is a crime drama that involves Holmes and Dr. Watson solving various cases.

Throughout its run, the series won many awards. This included the cast members as well. The series has been praised for the quality of its writing, acting, and direction. It became popular quickly. As a result, fans were disappointed when it ended with only 4 seasons. The series is one of the best among crime dramas.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

 Avatar is one of the most unique television series since it sort of combines anime and cartoon. It ran for three years from 2005-2008 with 3 seasons and 61 episodes.  The series explores a very unique concept. As a result, it has been popular among audience of all age groups. Moreover, it has also received several awards.

The series was acclaimed by critics and viewers alike for its direction, humour, characters, theme, art and cultural references. It explores concepts like war, genocide, free choice, imperialism and totalitarianism. The whole series has an Asian influence. It is one of the greatest animated series of all time.

All of these have some characteristics that make them unique and subsequently, good to watch. There may be many other series like these which explore a different and never before seen themes. Moreover, they might be even better than the ones mentioned here but that is entirely subjective. So, if you know some series which is worth spending time on, then let everyone reap fun from it.
