The idea of gender equality has started prevailing in the whole world. People have started questioning their daily thoughts on becoming the prey of inequality. Recently there has been a lot of changes, regarding the discrimination made on the basis of gender. More and more people are supporting the idea of feminism. On the basis of the same idea a question raises. In schools, universities and other work place, ladies are rarely cross examined in the event that they have long hair. Though if there should be an occurrence of men, they are debilitate to keep long hair. So for what reason are young men not permitted to keep long hair at school? There are a lot many reasons of following the age-old tradition, but not enough to justify practicing it till today.
LET’S HAVE A GLANCE AT THE HISTORY
In Indian history, there were gurukuls, where children went to learn about ayurvedic medicines, mathematics, astronomy etc. The disciples mostly shaved their head to intend that they are under learning stage in a gurukul. It was useful also, since it helped them to keep their head clean. Men were the ones who worked outside more than women, so it was obvious that they became dirty frequently. Those days there were no shampoo, or shower rooms which has made today bathing easier. All they had a common water body, which wasn’t appropriate to use cleaning agents.
Women education was also not prevalent during those days, so we can’t even talk about equality. Women mostly lived at home and looked after their children and other household chores. Ever since then, people encouraged men to have small hair. On the other hand, women were encouraged to have long hair, as it made them look more feminine.
FASHION HAS EVOLVED
Its 21st century, and almost everything has got a solution. As technology developed rapidly, it has made people’s life much easier. Hair care is not even a problem anymore. Internet is filled with the easiest life hacks if required. With different ideas, fashion has evolved so much that it has become de-gendered. We don’t style according to our gender anymore. We style according to our comfort and what makes us happy. As a result, a lot of men have shown interest in having long hair. Today, its not only about men and women. We should not forget that there exists a LGBTQ community also. Schools observe boys having long hair as fashion, but the fact is much more than that. It affects a student’s confidence, personality building and a lot more. Its normal for girls to have long hair, now let’s normalize for anyone to have long hair.
NOT SO SOBER LOOK
After years of practice, long hair has become a trend for gangsters and other intruders. For this, people have cultivated disrespect and hatred for men having long hair. Most of the men with long hair, do not have a good impression on the society. People consider men with properly trimmed hair as not only having a clean lifestyle but also having a clear heart. Men with trimmed hair reflect prestigious professions too as most of them like pilot, civil servant officer, army men, etc. are also not allowed to keep long hair. Whereas women are never objectified to keep long hair in any profession throughout their life. Since childhood most of the parents inspire their kids to become astronaut, scientist, doctor etc. but never artist, dancer or performer. May be because of years of practice of having long hair in this field also, it has somehow lost its reputation.
MAINTENANCE AT WORK
Depreciating long hair at work has a reason also. People do not like hair falling on face or causing any sort of distraction during work. Hair maintenance at work is not everyone’s cup of tea. It looks unprofessional too for some people, so it is always recommended to trim hair before any interview. Most of the women have an experience of having long hair since childhood, so they are never taunted or discouraged for embracing their long hair.
In case of men, people discourage them to have long hair since their childhood. So, it is said that without having any past experience of keeping long hair, men should not be allowed to keep long hair at work. It may distract them from important work, and engross them in styling it. But these reasons are not enough for justification in today’s generation, so these rules have to upgrade according to today’s world.
EXPECTANCE FROM GIRLS
The problem doesn’t end with men here. Women too face similar criticism, if they cut short their hair. Short hair for a woman represents bossy, self-concerned, egocentric, as her character. But in reality, physical appearance can’t speak everything correct about a person’s personality. Society expects women to have long hair. Long hair is one of the criteria of being a so called ‘beautiful lady’. But we should remember that with time, a lot many women have struggled to know their true potential, and have desired to be what she really is. All women are not same, and so are their ideas. Their choices can be too different than what the society expects. Its not necessary that women can cut hair short only if they are facing hair problems or suffering cancer. Its high time we realize that short hair for women is also now included in the fashion book.
Let’s come back to the question. Its 21st century and we must realize that every person has their own opinion and right for equality. We are on the way to impose gender equality on every ground, every level. So, its high time we stop discriminating students of the basis of their gender. If a girl can have long hair at school, a boy should also be treated the same way. We must realize, that the length of the hair should not be the medium to judge a person’s character and treat everyone with equality. Its completely the person’s wish how they want to look. Its their body, their decision. We cannot impose rules on everything, which doesn’t even belong to us.
