Born in 1971, in New Zealand, as Gregory Paul McLaren with Australian Aboriginal heritage, Lucky Diamond Rich holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s Most Tattooed Person since 2006. He is 100 percent tattooed and took over the title of being the world’s most tattooed man from Tom Leppard. Rich has tattoos covering his whole body, including ears, mouth, foreskin and insides of his eyelids.
Lucky Rich joined circus at the age of 16 and became a performer. Today, he is a performance artist, street performer and international arts festival performer whose acts include sword swallowing and juggling chainsaws while balancing himself on a ten-foot unicycle. He has an interesting story to tell when it comes to his unusual name – Lucky Diamond Rich. He stated that he considers himself ‘Lucky’ to be able to ride a ten-foot unicycle while juggling chainsaws and to be able to swallow swords. His friends used to call him a bit of a rough diamond so, Diamond’ came from there and ‘Rich’ because he enjoys life to the fullest and is rich in spirit. Isn’t it interesting?
Besides his name and profession, Rich’s most exceptional feature is surely his entire tattooed body. Rich recalls that as a teenager, he read a lot about tattoos which piqued his interest in tattooed men and women. He got a small juggling club tattooed on his hip as his first tattoo. And then he went on to tattoo his whole body including his intimate region. Hundreds of different tattoo artists have worked on his body for more than 1000 hours to get him completely inked from head to toe.
Firstly, Lucky Rich covered his body with colourful designs from around the world and later, he decided to go for his first body suit at the age of 28, with 100% covering of black ink on his entire body including his gums, ears, foreskin, skin between his toes and insides of eyelids. He then tattooed white designs on top of the black ink followed by coloured designs on top of the white designs to get layers of tattoos on his body.
According to him, every tattoo on his body has got a story associated with it. It is fascinating to note that Rich did not stop here. Besides his tattoos, he got his earlobes stretched and his teeth replaced with silver veneers, as well as various piercings on different parts of his body.
Though, his unusual appearance attracts attention from a lot of people, not all of which is positive, Lucky Rich does not let other people’s opinions affect him in any way as he considers himself a normal human being just like all of us and his following words clearly reflect this:
“What other people think of me is none of my business. I don’t get my self-esteem
from what others think of me. I like myself today.
Everyone’s different with how they react. It’s like the weather, you can’t predict
it, you can’t control it, you just deal with it as it comes.
I’m no different to anyone else, I’m just heavily tattooed. I bleed like anyone
else; I have the same sorts of problems that most people have living through
their daily life.”
